I don't think the OtterBox is overkill, but does look marine worthy. The thing looks like a tank. (and I bet it feels like a tank). How about the glove compartment?

Rhinoskin AL
I have a silver (wish it was black, humm, guess I could do that myself) RhinoSkin AL case - I removed the plastic screen protector so I can touch screen items with the case closed. I'd like to 'open up' the keyboard area too so I can type with out opening up the 'door', but if I cut it open I'll be dealing with jagged edges probably (humm, I do have a dremmel I should be able to smooth them out).
I'm really impressed with the survivability of the case. I had two 'waist to hard floor' drops with absolutely no damage.
Has anyone 'opened up' their keyboard area? or know of another AL padded case with the open area?

If you get the nerve up to be the guinea pig, let us know if you have any luck smoothing out the edges!

drybag for Treo

A company called Aquapac makes a sort of Treo "drybag". It's called the Treo 650 Waterproof Case. I will probably get one at some point, especially if I ever go kayaking again. They claim you can hear and be heard through the plastic.

A ziploc bag works the same:rolleyes:

I've been researching forums for a good case for my new iPod - considering they are VERY easy to scratch. Some people are using saranwrap until they get their case. So, Ziploc isn't that far off.

bad palmone, good speck
I used the formfit case by palmone for about a week, but I knew that I already didn't want it after the first day. I bought it because it has a clear protective cover on the entire front, which allowed me to see everything and press buttons and (I thought) tap the screen if needed. Well, the clear protective cover is stretched just enough so that you can only tap the lower two-thirds of the screen. There is no way to tap the top of the screen with the protective cover on. Even though the Treo is designed to be able to do everything with the buttons, certain programs don't support this idealogy and require you to tap the screen once in a while.
Therefore, I returned the palmone formfit case and ordered the new GripSkin by Speck Products. I picked the GripSkin over the SkinTight not because the ridges offer a better grip, but because they probably provide better cushioned protection when the Treo falls on its side. Plus, they're the same price (retail value at least).
At first, I decided not to get a skin case by Speck because reviews said that the flip screen cover falls off after a while. I'm convinced that these are the people that take their phone in and out of the case often enough to wear out the screen cover hinge. The argument here is that they need to do this in order to access the SD card. I personally am patient enough to just transfer files to the card via the Treo instead of my card reader. But that's just me. So as soon as I've used the GripSkin for a few days, I'll comment again. Until then, happy Treoing.

good speck (review on gripskin)
the gripskin by speck products is wonderful. it really has the most amazing grip ever. when i showed my coworkers my new toy, those that weren't familiar with the treo were impressed by just the case that i had it in.
i like the fact that it doesn't utilize the little nub to latch onto the belt clip. that way i can carry it around comfortably in my pocket when i need to. one disadvantage though of the grip (and most skin cases) is that it's hard to get it in and out of small pockets. but that doesn't affect me much since i prefer to use the belt clip most of the time. the covers over the buttons match up very well and they actually make the buttons easier to press. i debated on whether to get clear or black for a long time, and i went with clear just so that the green and red phone buttons were visible for when friends borrow my phone to make a call. silly reason but i had to come up with something to make the decision.
the main issue that people have been claiming with the skin cases made by speck products is that the flip-action screen cover will fall off after constantly taking the treo in and out of the case. i find that hard to believe. maybe they are removing the screen cover in order to take the treo in and out of the case through the screen opening. i take my treo in and out of the case through the keyboard opening without removing the screen cover.
there are openings for everything except the sd card. this made me a little sad at first, but then another way to think of it is that you'll never lose your sd card from accidental pop-outs.
i'd give the gripskin a 9 out of 10.

Thanx for that thorough review, geotu.
I'm currently switching between a palmOne form-fit clip, a top-loading holster, and a side-loading holster. But I am now compelled to try out a Speck Toughskin or Gripskin based on your comments.
Thanx again for sharing.
