Copy 650 data to new 680 -- and use them both
Just got an unlocked 680 after my Sprint 650 had external speaker failure. Haven't synced the 680 to my Mac yet because I want to keep using the old 650 as a (phoneless) PDA, meaning I want to at least start out with the same data on both.
How can I best go about this? Seems it would involve:
1. Installing the 680's software on the Mac that the 650 has been synced with.
2. Making sure the two Treos have different names.
3. Copying the old data (including non-commercial apps like freeware) to the new Treo. The hard part is doing this without making it unavailable to the old Treo.
4. Then installing the commercial apps I own (like TomTom Nav. 5) onto the 680.
How best to proceed? If it would help, I could sync the 650 exclusively to one Mac in future and the 680 exclusively to another.
Suggestions welcomed gratefully.

Even if you name it differently, I'm wondering if you could run into issues syncing an older Treo 650 and the Treo 680 (my thinking is Palm Desktop might be slightly different).
Upgrading to the 680, should be a breeze. First off, I do a complete HotSync with the Treo 650. Backup all of your apps, etc. I'd make a copy of your User folder (option click to desktop) and then proceed with the Treo 680 software installation. Once everything is working, you can delete the copy on your desktop.
Are you looking to keep both Treos in sync with each other and your Mac?

You may be right that Desktop 680 wouldn't sync with Treo 650, though the fact that Palm Desktop usually lets you set up more than one username hints that it could work. However, I can live with syncing the old Treo to another Mac (to which it has synced in the past).

You're recommending the desktop copy for backup security, I guess. Once the 680 install has worked successfully, then I could trash the 650 backup. Right?
Let's assume I use two Macs -- one for each Treo. If I set up the new 680 and its desktop software on Mac #1 (now used to sync the 650), I should be able to use the old 650's username and all my data should be transferred to the 680.
Then if I sync the old 650 to Mac #2 (where it has also been synced in the past) I would probably want to change the username so that I could do IR exchanges of new records. I'm just not sure how to change the username.

Not really, if I sync them to separate Macs. I might sometimes share specific Contact or Event records between them, but I should be able to do that via infrared, no? Remember that the 650 no longer has telephone or internet functions. That means I don't have a lot of records to keep current on both.
BUT, I might want to install a new copy of TomTom Navigator on one or the other, so I can leave the 650 in my home car and use the 680 when traveling in Europe.
Thanks for your quick response.
