Why can't the thing just WORK???
I've had almost every model of the Palm since it first came out. Tried the Kyocera 7135, but it just wasn't ready for prime time, and it was supposed to be the best. Finally settled on the combination of a Motorola V710 and PalmOne T3 -- until two days ago, when I got a Verizon Treo 650.
I'm not happy.
I'm running Tiger (OS X) on a PowerBook. I find I have to reboot in order to sync again (I'm using iSynch 2.0). ZLauncher works; Panther icons work. VoiceSignal's Voice Dialer seems to work (although it's not nearly as effective in the implementation, for some reason, as the same company's product on the 710; also, you're limited to 3,000 contacts). MyDiet 7.0 requires a runtime program that doesn't seem to work. Now my synchs abort mid-way through.
On top of that, I have a hanging voicemail counter (it sticks at 1, even when there are no new messages); and the contact list doesn't respond to the five way button to go down the list unless I tap the elevator with the stylus first!!
All in all, really disappointing.

You are not alone in your frustration. First off, I'm moving your post to the Mac forum as a matter of housekeeping.
I've spent entirely too much time working out issues trying to get iSync to work and "figure it all out". From all my research, I've concluded that iSync 2.0 is crap. That being said, it's crap that we all have to live with until Apple provides a decent conduit. Without going into details, I recently had kernel panics on my desktop Mac and decided it was time to get a new Powerbook. Yesterday, I spent the day & most of the evening getting iCal & Address book to work with Missing Sync. Now, I know Missing Sync works --- iSync 2.0 and iCal -- not so good. In the end, I'm up and running -- and everything is syncing to dot mac. Along the way, just all kinds of weird stuff. After enabling my Palm OS Device (my treo), it came up and things were going sort of ok. After the first sync, there was no data in Address Book or iCal. Then, I had all kinds of data -- massive amounts of duplicates. After rebooting, iSync no longer found my Treo and wouldn't allow me to add a device. Totally weird because Missing Sync found it ok. Apparently, this is common because I found a horde of folks on the Apple Discussion forums with the same issue.
I'm not sure how/why it works now. I think there was some voodoo or praying to the iSync gods. I spent most of the night deleting iCal events. I find iCal to be a dog. I'm going to give the iCal/Address Book team a few weeks to work for me. It seems as if this apps are made for iPod's and "power users" who own PDA's like the Treo are left with a substandard planner. Like so many Apple users, I'm struggling to keep my computing life to Apple iApps -- right now, the only thing keeping me with the iCal/Address Book is the lack of a good replacement. As a Mac user, our choices are limited. I'm typing this from my desktop and glancing down at the dock. The Palm icon is a 333Mhz Blue iMac - how disappointing.
Well, I'm through venting for a Saturday morning. Off to transfer my Mail to... Mail. It may not be the best email client, but I'm committed to Apple. A few more battles with iSync 2.0 and they'll need to commit me. ;)

Chris, I feel better knowing I'm not alone...
I've gotten old enough now that I've become a technology curmudgeon -- it ain't cool if it don't work!
Problem is, I can't go back to the dark side...

Got MyDiet to work
Not sure how well yet. Will keep you posted.

My Voicemail counter is also stuck at 1 but I can Navigate Contacts without a problem. One cool thing that I found was that I can navigate the Call Log to redial recent calls and contacts and finding myself using that more than the actual contact list.

I actually took my Treo 600 back to Sprint last year after losing all my iCal and Address Book data when I first did a sync. I was not able to get any kind of support from either Sprint or Palm (the catch phrase being "we don't officially support Mac users...") Ugh!
I decided to try again with the 650, and using Missing Sync. I had a bit of trouble at first, like Chris described, with no data, then duplicates everywhere, but have gotten it all straightened around. I have yet to upgrade to Tiger; I am a little scared!
Anyway, in spite of the difficulties, I still find that in general, Mac apps and all things Mac tend to be simpler and run far smoother than the things I used to do with Windows....

Running CalorieKing without problems
This is one old OS (Palm, that is).

Voice mail indicator at 1
If you’re referring to the “1” next to the “Voice mail” line in the first page of the phone launcher, I think that’s the hotkey that triggers a voice mail connection. It’s not a message counter.
It was the same between a Verizon and Cingular Treo 650. I’m not sure whether you can re-assign that hotkey or not.

You can't reasign the hotkey for Voicemail. And I think they're talking about
the Voicemail Icon next to the Bluetooth iCon. I could be wrong though.
