Default Can I sync with Windows XP; modem with Vista?

I have a Palm Treo Pro. I currently synchronize on my Windows XP desktop machine using Active Sync. However, I also want to use my phone as modem with my laptop, which uses Vista.

It's my understanding that I would use the Windows Mobile Device Center on my Vista laptop to connect the phone to the laptop for use as a modem. However, I'm concerned that I also need to load something on the phone and that Active Sync and Windows Mobile Device Center won't be compatible if both are on the phone.

If you aren't using the same OS on both machines, will it make a difference? I haven't tried it yet but don't want to screw anything up.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, advice or cautions.

I am not sure but windows mobile device center is for synching and if you are just connecting without a sync you should not need to install WMDC in order to use the pro as a modem.

T-Mobile told me I would need to use Active Sync, but they don't support the Treo. So I went to Windows Mobile and saw that I wouldn't download Active Sync to a Vista machine. It would use The WMDC. I wonder if Palm support would know. Thanks for the reply.

If you go to the Palm website under the Support Menu, there' and article there called "How to use your Windows Mobile smartphone as a wireless modem" Its Article ID 14924

I found it under Treo Pro Unlocked heading, if I remember correctly but here's the link...
http://www.palm.com/us/search/suppor...reless%20modem

There it tells you the settings for your Treo Pro and your PC, if using USB, and nowhere does it mention that Vista is required.

The same article also has the instructions to create a Bluetooth Internet Sharing Connection.

If your laptop has come with Vista it will more than likely have Bluetooth capabilities which may work as an alternate option for you.

I have Vista on my lappie and using my Palm Pro as a modem works a treat when I am away from home. Just do need to have a reasonable data plan with your mobile phone tho.

Hope this helps.
