silence ring locked phone

OK in order to save the battery on my new pro when I press the end screen the phone goes into a sleep mode i guess. when i have emails coming in I have to wake up the phone by pressing the center key then go open the email folder to get hte ringer to shut off. Am I missing something???? Is there another easier way to silence the ringtones???

I'm new to the Pro as well and would love to learn how to silence the ringer without pushing the Ignor soft key.

You can turn all sounds off by the slider button on the top of the phone. It kills all sounds but vibrates to warn you off activity.
