First, I have only had my Treo 755p for about 2 weeks and have done much research on it already. However, copying AVI's to the mem card for use with TCPMP has created a bit of an issue during the HotSync operation.
First I attempted to use the Palm Desktop software to transfer the AVI's to the memory card. It appears that PD will NOT transfer the files unconverted and insists on creating an asf file to copy to the device regardless of whether you use the Media or Quick Install options. When doing small home video AVI's this isn't much of a problem. However, I do have some larger AVI's (some close to a gigabyte) that makes this unreasonable (the asf ends up being larger after all, not to mention the time it takes to do the conversion).
Since I do not have an SD card reader I had to come up with another solution. After looking around I came across the utility/program
FilePC2PDA that will allow me to copy the file to the memory card untouched. However, now I run into an issue when I try to hotsync between PD and the Treo755. A ~700mb AVI was on the mem card and after about 40 minutes of it trying to sync my pictures/videos I gave up and canceled the operation. My guess is it is trying to copy the AVI back to the PC as a back-up, then it will probably convert to asf and resend it to the Treo, but I'm not waiting around to find out. I did find a copy of the file appearing in my Palm folder on the desktop. Is there a way I can stop this from occuring?
I have dinked around with the application FileZ for the PalmOS and it appears I can change the 'attributes' of files. Select the file (an AVI in this case) within 'FileZ' and go to details. Under the 'Attr' tab there is a box next to 'Archived' that can be checked or unchecked. Will unchecking the box prevent the AVI from being backed up (and converted) during the next hotsync?
I'm going to give it a try. I can't see how it could possibly screw anything up. If it doesn't work is there some way that I can manage what I am wanting to do?
TIA for any help that is provided.
