Question on verizons data plans.
I'm planning to purchase the 650 within the next month. One feature i'm interested in is being able to check my email with this device.
I'm looking into these Verizon wireless sync plans, but do I really need them. I don't wish to have my phones constantly updated every hour of the day. I thought I could use my phone and check my email whenever, and just use the minutes off my plan, without having to buy into another plan.
Would I also be correct in assuming that downloading email would cost some change since I'm technically downloading bits. Checking email on my phone is NOT very important to me, but would be a nice little feature. But if it's going to add another 15 to 25 dollars a month, then it's not THAT necessary.
Thanks for any input.

Verizon data plans
Verizon has 3 data plans: ~$50/month for unlimited data, ~$30/month for up to 10 Meg of data, and a $0.15/kilobyte pay-as-you-go. You can change the data plan whenever you want.
They're kind of expensive, if you're not going to do much data-wise then the $0.15/kilobyte plan is the way to go. It's hard to justify $30 or $50 a month when you're not sure how much you will use it, IMHO.

Average Use?
Another question for this topic
How much data does the average person use?
For instance, I would like to use a treo to receive some company email - maybe 4 or 5 emails a day, and surf the web. Any idea what this would cost.
I am not a heavy e-mail on the go user, but this could increase if i find it much easier to stay in touch.
I see sprint and cingular charge much less for unlimited use, why is verizon so high I wonder?

Just got my Treo650 a week and a half ago. I opted to try the unlimited data plan, knowing I can cancel it at any time. I've been playing around a lot with the web access and email access. I've set up VersaMail to link up with my Yahoo email accound and perform a manual "get" once a day but you can also schedule recurring tasks to get your email. I do not use Verizon's wireless sync.
As far as usage, I've been pretty heavy on the data, browsing the web, checking weather, movie times, plus some idle surfing and I've already accumulated 4,684 KB Total (1,197 sent, 3,487 received). My guess is that I could save a bit and make do with the $30/10MB plan. If I had gone with the $0.15/KB, I'd have racked up over $700 already (yikes!), so I would suggest one of the other plans if you're considering data at all.

Wow.
Seems you are doing exactly like I planned to. Use the web a little and set up my yahoo email account.
I will probably just go with the unlimited. I mean, I am getting a smart phone, why not use it? Otherwise I could have just gone with the regular phone.
I'll probably just end up going with unlimited until i get a handle on how much I use, If i find myself under 10MB a month for a couple months, then I'll switch. But with my job, I find that internet on the go is almost a necessity.
BTW I just went to order my treo from VZW and they were out of stock. Have to wait until tomorrow I think:mad:
Thanks for the replies, Take care

anyone know if Verizon has them back in stock. I called yesterday and got the runaround about upgrading from a kyocera 7135. They said I needed to go to a store to upgrade, but all the stores in my area are sold out currently.

I would do a quick yellow pages search and check store to store. I'm surprised you couldn't buy it direct and have them ship it.
The are in stock at the Everything Treo Store. This however is with a new contract only.

I just got my treo 650.. today actually..
I live in Manhattan..did some research -- the 650 is a hot item and
all the Verizon stores are out of them...here in NYC. You have to order thru
the store or online. You get $100 off if you are eligible for a phone upgrade..plus
around $50-60 (check) off if you sign a 2-yr contract. Not shabby...but Verizon
is still the most expensive carrier -- They claim they are the best game in town..
go figure ;-)
I opted for the overnite Fedex package ($14 shipping).
It was quite hassle-free to activate over the phone...and their
tech support was good.
Now..I am doing research on kool apps compatible with Mac OS X.
I am trying Snappermail Enterprise edition -- Good so far.....gmail is
quite a challenge as it requires SSL...trying a work-around solution.
Also, I signed up for the "unlimited" data plan -- quite expensive...but will
find out my usage at the end of the billing cycle..and adjust my plan
accordingly..if needed.

I was in the city today for a consulting gig and there were TONS of Treo's. They were everywhere...

In the edit server settings, there is an option for SSL. Never had the need to use it, but it's there.

I like Missing Sync -- allows you to mount your SD card like an external drive. Plus, it has full integration with iTunes and iPhoto.
I was checking out Documents to Go today -- that's a very cool app if you use Word or Excel a lot.
Since most apps run off the palm, you shouldn't worry so much about Mac Palm apps. SplashData has some very cool Palm apps that have desktop programs.

Chris...thanks..
I trust your knowledge..as you have been using treos longer..;-)
If you walk into into any Verizon store, you will see the Treo 650s on display..
but not in stock if you ask to purchase. Very strange.
The SSL settings that Google and Snappermail suggest is wrong -- it does not
work. I had to make tweaks to get gmail working. I will post my findings in here later.
Thanks...heard good things about missing sync & documents to go..will give these a shot
