NTP Files Patent Suit Against Palm
NTP, fresh from their lawsuit against RIM (Research in Motion), have filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Palm. The charges are related to Palm profiting from solutions that allegedly infringe on radio frequency (RF) enabled email systems.
NTP’s only business is licensing patents and contacted Palm’s then parent company 3Com in January, 2000. The patent-infringement suit covers 7 patents, 5 or which were named in the RIM lawsuit. RIM agreed to pay NTP $612.5 million to settle the 5-year dispute.
Palm released a statement saying, “Palm is disappointed that, after many months of silence and repeated rejections of NTP’s claims by the PTO, NTP has chosen to sue on patents of doubtful validity.” Shares of Palm fell on news of the suit.
