Palm Pre Plus Suffering From Keyboard Issues?

Our friend Dieter at PreCentral points us to a survey that shows some disturbing numbers regarding keyboard issues plaguing Palm Pre Plus owners. A myriad of issues including letters being entered twice, some letters not being entered and input lag. Not good, not good at all. The issue is isolated to the Verizon Palm Pre Plus.

As with any forum poll, the numbers are usually not reflective of the greater userbase, but this is still alarming. At last check, only 23% of respondents indicated “No typing problems”, while a whopping 42% are experiencing all three issues. Roughly 20% experience double letter, missed letters, but no input lag.

Have a Verizon Palm Pre Plus? Are you experiencing any of these issues?

  1. I have a regular palm pre and I’ve had those problems! And I think other palm pre owners with say the same thing but just accepted it 2 some degree

  2. Yup, consistent keyboard issues. Unfortunate, but tolerable.

YES! I turned back a Pre Plus for this! SAME PROBLEM! IT SUCKS!

  6. Those are bad news for an international Palm devices fan like me ,makes me wait longer until a new model comes out sometime and I hope with no more issues and so simple as the one mentioned :( Where is the hardware quality control???

  7. I have Sprint Palm Pre and do not experience this problem. I was about to make the jump to Verizon for the Pre Plus in a few months when my contract expires, but I think I’ll stick around with Sprint then.

  8. I have the double letter issue and the non entering letters issues. its a bit laggy but not too bad.

I still use a TREO, waited for the Plam Pre but was so disappointed in the keyboard I’m STILL using the TREO. Too bad Palm couldn’t get the keyboard fixd. I like the rounded keys with space between them on the TREO. AND . . . the ledge on the pull out keyboard – YUCKKKKKK! Too bad, I’m a Palm fan but won’t use the new Palm devices unless they fix the keyboard issues.

  10. I am on my 3rd Pre and so is my girlfriend, we have had double letters and missing letter entry problems on all 4 so far, very frustrated.

  11. I’ve used several palm products, prior to the pre plus, and none of them have had the keyboard problems I have been experiencing with the pre plus – double entry, input lag, and difficulty editing due to decreased sensitivity of the touch screen and lack of a scroll-friendly button (e.g. arrows or a ball). Terribly frustrating.

My display also flashes on and off uncontrollably, at certain times while I place calls.

Palm has fallen far below my expectations with this phone. I hope they can fix these issue soon.

  12. I have finally gotten so frustrated with this problem. I have the double letter, missing letters and lag problem with my Verizon phone. It has been getting worse and worse since I got the phone a few months ago. I thought it was just me, but now I am getting ready to return it.

  13. Same old story multiple types with single presses and no types sometimes -Weird and annoying -I wish a spell check was available

  14. I have the same problem with my Verizon Pre Plus. Not only is the keyboard bad (as described above), but the OS is kind of spotty. For example, sometimes an app will freeze for 10 seconds or more, but the gesture pad and the rest of the OS works ok. The keyboard is almost unusable for me, so this is very disappointing.

I took it to a Verizon store, and they told me that the warranty is voided when a phone is transferred from one line to another (and I bought this one brand new from a friend).
Does Palm offer its own warranty on this phone?

  15. Mary Anne Mendola Franco says:

Terrible problems with double letters or missing letters on keyboard. Never had a problem with the Treo or with an iPhone. Very frustrating and upsetting. Anywhere to adjust keyboard sensitivity?

  16. Jennifer says:

On my second pre. The first one double typed from day 1. The verizon store repaced it. The second was so much better, for about 2 weeks and has now started double typing. I am really sick of it, but love every other aspect of the phone. Replacing it again and going through having to change the settings again is a pain if it’s just going to do it again. I wish it could just be fixed somehow.

  17. I have the same issue. The keys double type, lag, or don’t type at all. It really is almost unusable, I was wondering if it was just me but it seems as though this may not even be a fixable problem at this point. I love the phone and don’t want to get a different one, but I can’t text/email like this. It looks incredibly unprofessional and takes double the amount of time when I delete and fix everything!

  18. newpalmuser says:

I am a new palm pre plus user. I love the phone despite some of the issues such as latencies in launching application etc. Of late, (approx. 30 days since I got the phone) I have been experiencing this problem of double character case, and missing keystrokes. It is progressively degnerating to the point of becoming unusable. I wish I had known this issue before buying the phone….

  19. SO FRUSTRATING!! I had one phone that started turning off whenever I opened the keyboard. Then I got a replacement and this one has all three double letter, input lag, and missing letters from the get-go. Now my keyboard won’t even respond and I have to take it back to the store. I can’t text or type anything because nothing shows up!

  20. Dontbelieveit says:

Well I have the palm pre plus through Verizon, and I am getting the double type very frequently. I called Verizon to get it replaced within the 30 days and they said they would send me a replacement.
Hopefully the double type issue will go away.

  21. Husband and I both got our palm pre pluses at the same time. His is fine, I can text on his no keyboard issues. My first one was horrible right off the bat, so I gave it some time thinking I was just getting used to the keyboard. Finally got so fed up with it I had a new one sent to me. Initially this second Pre seemed much more solid and clicky (rather than mushy/squeaky) in the keyboard. As some others have said, over time, all of the keyboard issues returned. I not only have double letters but sometimes 4 and 5 of one letter per push of key.

I love everything else about this phone but will not get another one because of how infuriating this keyboard is. I’m ready to return #2.

  22. I got my 3rd palm pre today after having these issues on my second starting up about a week or so ago. It got to the point where restarting would fix the issue temporarily, then when i brought it in, they did something to it because it worked better, but told me it was a hardware issue and needed replacing.

while waiting for the replacement it got to the point where i did full erase and then couldnt log in to setup due to the keyboard.

so now I’ve restarted my new pre i received 3 hours ago TWICE because this issue has resurfaced on this brand new replacement.

Is there a chance this is software/profile related or did i really just get a broken replacement pre?

I can’t believe some people tolerate this issue, unless their issues are less prominent/requiring long restarts. Can’t wait to switch to android at this point/diff hardware.

  23. yes it sucks, unusable!

  24. Absolutely hate it. Every single message sounds illiterate. Keyboard is also cheap and plastic-y. Definitely switching phones.
