Verizon Palm Pre 2 Now Free On Contract

With the HP Pre 3 waiting in the wings, it’s increasingly difficult to move the Pre 2. As a result, HP Wireless is selling the Pre 2 for the price of free. You’ll need to give up 2 years of your wireless life, but you’ll also receive a free Touchstone, Vehicle Charger, Power Adapter and Palm Pre side case. All in all, a really nice bundle. Is it worth giving up on waiting for the Pre 3? That’s the question.

Verizon Palm Pre 2 Coming February 17th?

Remember the Palm Pre 2? The phone announced in October of last year for Verizon Wireless. If the screenshot of a Verizon inventory system rings true, the Palm Pre 2 will land on Verizon Wireless on February 17th and will be priced at $100 after rebate. That’s a full four months after the initial announcement.

Verizon Palm Pre 2

To say the Palm Pre 2 is late to the party would be an understatement. With all the hype surrounding next week’s big Think Big event, we have to wonder if Palm is going to deliver that superphone it so desperately needs. We’re stating the obvious, but won’t the Palm Pre 2 get suffocated by the Verizon iPhone, not to mention a shelf filled with Android devices. Worse yet, this release date comes after the Verizon iPhone launch on February 10th, after the HTC Thunderbolt release on February 13th and after Valentine’s Day.

Say it ain’t so. The only thing worse in recent history was Verizon’s decision to target soccer moms.

Palm webOS 2.1 Getting Pushed Today?

According to a few reports, Palm has started to push webOS 2.1 to some devices. The update is far from being widespread, but it’s been seen on the Sprint Pre, a Palm Pre 2 and a Rogers Palm Pre 2.  No update here on an AT&T Palm Pre Plus, but that doesn’t leave us not hoping for some pre-event goodness.

webOS 2.0 Coming in 2011?

Most of us expected that webOS 2.0 would be available by the end of 2010 for current devices. That’s looking more and more unlikely as we hit the mid-point of December. Even if it’s released to carriers, we all know the delays in getting even minor updates out the door. One has to wonder if webOS 2.0 is ready for prime time? Outside of a small group of developers who received a free Pre 2 for attending Palm’s recent developer conference, the only way to secure Palm’s new Pre 2 in the US is to purchase an unlocked model for $450. Maybe troubles with webOS 2.0 are the reason for the delay of the Verizon Palm Pre 2?

PreCentral notes that O2 Germany’s Twitter account indicates that webOS 2.0 won’t hit devices until Q1.

We hoped that Palm’s vague release date of “coming months” was simply a ploy to over deliver. That doesn’t appear to be the case and now we’re left waiting. What’s more, we’ve yet to see webOS 2.0 running on a device other than the Palm Pre 2. webOS 1.4.5 runs slow on an non-patched Palm Pre Plus. Will the new OS resolve the speed issues that plague all of the current generation devices? I guess we’ll find out in Q1.

Palm Pixi 2 Rumored for SRF, HP Palm To Ship Bi-Monthly Smartphones

Rumors today via our friends at PreCentral that Palm will ship a new Palm Pixi 2 to SFR. It appears that France has become the new hotbed for new Palm devices, with SFR being the only current provider offering the Palm Pre 2. Palm had stated that Verizon would carry the Palm Pre 2 in the “coming months“, but the two have missed the critical holiday shopping window. With CES around the corner, sending the Palm Pre 2 to the shelves in January would be the equivalent of taking a knife to a gunfight. The news is not all bleak. The Palm Pre 2 represents an incremental upgrade, a phone that likely wouldn’t have sold in numbers that would affect any real positive change in market share. What’s needed from HP/Palm is one or more killer devices. News today indicates that phones are indeed coming. HP’s Todd Bradley told employees of HP that the company plans to “ship a new smartphone every two months“.

CES is coming. HP/Palm will certainly be there and we’ll be there live blogging the yet-unannounced event. Will Palm bring it?

GSM Palm Pre 2 Now Available From HP

While we wait for the subsidized Verizon Palm Pre 2, HP has started offering the commitment free unlocked GSM Pre 2 through their online store. It will set you back a hefty $449, but for now that’s the only way you can get webOS 2.0 goodness in the states.

Anyone taking the jump?

Palm Pre 2 November 11th Release Date Rumor Smashed

A few weeks back, we reported on a rumor that the Palm Pre 2 would release on Verizon Wireless on November 11th. No better way to smash a rumor than to have the calendar move to November 11th without any new Palm devices on the shelves of our local Verizon Wireless store. PreCentral reported earlier this week Palm Pre 2 training is taking place, which is certainly a good sign. That original rumor also mentioned a slew of Android devices including the Droid Pro, so it’s partially correct, since pre-orders have started shipping for those devices. With an onslaught of Android devices, let’s hope that Verizon CSR’s do a better job pimping webOS to potential customers. Right now, Android phones like the Droid Pro have a bit of head start.

Palm Pre 2

As for when the Palm Pre 2 might hit shelves? Tough to say, but one would think sometime soon. We’ve yet to see a review of the production Palm Pre 2, which usually precedes any major launch. Stay tuned! It’s gotta be soon, no?

Palm Pre Plus Back At Verizon

The Palm Pre Plus had gone missing from Verizon’s website last week, prompting many to think that perhaps they were making room for the forthcoming Palm Pre 2. It looks as if the Palm Pre Plus is back online again at Verizon, so again we’re in a holding pattern waiting for the Pre 2. Still no official release date or reviews, but we have seen a rumored November 11th date. When we hear something, concrete or otherwise, we’ll pass it along.
