Palm Working On “Mini-Pre” To Be Released Later This Year?

While attempting to find out the official release date for the Palm Pre, TechCrunch came across information regarding a new webOS device they are calling the "Mini-Pre". During our Q&A after Palm’s CES event, representatives from Palm did confirm that webOS would show up on new Palm devices. News that a new, smaller webOS device that might hit before the end of 2009 is certainly big news and it’s earlier than we expected.

Reports say it could come as early as the Fall. For the past year, there has been a buzz regarding the iPhone nano, but nothing coming from Cupertino suggests this product exists. Palm’s "Mini-Pre" could fill that niche and expand the webOS ecosystem.

The "Mini-Pre" will not be a replacement for the Palm Pre, but a product that likely be targeted for a different audience.  Smaller, less features and at a more attractive price point. Priced at under $100, Palm’s Centro product has been a tremendously popular product for the company. Will this new product provide them with an upgrade path? Will this new "Mini-Pre" be released under the Centro brand? How will it differ from the Palm Pre? Will it be available on Verizon, AT&T or Sprint? All good questions and perhaps we’ll receive more information as we progress through 2009.
