HP TouchPad 64GB Sort Of Introduced

Over at PreCentral, they spotted a 64GB white HP TouchPad on HP France’s landing page. The new model features 64GB of storage , a faster 1.5Ghz processor and comes in white. The site lists the new model as ‘coming soon‘ and apparently that’s within the next 1-2 weeks. PreCentral reached out to HP and they provided a statement as to availability.

HP TouchPad 64GB

“This week, we have started introducing Pre3 in EMEA, and will also be debuting our 64GB TouchPad in the region. With more memory, a faster processor and available in gloss white, HP is excited to add this product to our TouchPad line and will announce regions and pricing closer to availability.”

Scratching your head as to what’s behind the new Euro-stealth marketing strategy? You are not alone.

The HP Pre 3 is alive and shipping, just not here in the US.

HP Manages Quietest Launch in webOS History With Pre 3

HP Pre 3

HP has released the Pre 3. You might not have known about it, since there were no press releases or fanfare outside of the huge HP event six months ago. The Pre 3 is apparently available for pre-order from Palm’s Euro Store and several third party retailers. From what we are hearing, Palm’s own store is lagging shipments, while third parties shipped out yesterday. In fact, it shouldn’t be much longer before we see a few Pre 3 unboxings on YouTube. That left most wondering when the US would see the Pre 3. HP reached out to responded to an inquiry from PreCentral, to let us know the following:

HP is excited to begin its regional rollout of Pre3, the only phone today that offers users a slide-out keyboard coupled with a large touchscreen and the fastest speed (1.4GHz processor – the fastest on the market). We expect to share additional information for U.S. customers soon.

No carrier announcements in the US. No reviews. Just a few users who paid full price at random third party retailers in Europe. If the plan was to keep the Pre 3 under the radar, then job well done.

You have to wonder if US carriers have agreed to carry the Pre 3 and what happens to webOS if they are no longer interested in the platform? The Pre 3 is looking more and more like the Pre 2. Yet another stopgap device with minimal marketing and minimal release plans. Last night’s report that Best Buy is having trouble selling the HP TouchPad just adds to the pain.

Editorial: HP running out of second chances with webOS

It’s August 5th, a little over one month since the release of the HP TouchPad. Announced in February, there has been a slow march of hype surrounding the first tablet with webOS. We’ve seen this before with the original Pre launch. This time was going to be different. It was also an opportunity for HP to flex their marketing muscle beyond that of the cash-strapped Palm. Despite their best efforts, it hasn’t translated into an acceptable sales number. In what can be seen only as a last ditch effort, today we have seen a plethora of deep discounts. Woot, normally reserved for products that are on their way out, is one of many including HP themselves offering $100 plus off the HP TouchPad. Surely, this isn’t what HP management meant when they said the TouchPad would be number 1 plus. What’s happened since the February introduction of these new products and where do they take webOS from here?

HP Pre 3 Not Coming To Sprint

Since the launch of the original Palm Pre back in June of 2009, there haven’t been any new webOS devices on Sprint. Anyone who was with Palm at the start of webOS has buzzed through their 2 year committment, desperate for a webOS phone of any kind. Many hoped that Sprint would get back on board with the HP Pre 3. That’s not the case according to This Is My Next. They claim a trusted source within Sprint  saying that the HP Pre 3 is not coming to Sprint and there are no plans for any future webOS device.

HP Pre 3

Sprint has become cozy with Android phones, but many webOS faithful were hopeful they would jump back in the game with the HP Pre 3. If TIMN sources are correct, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This report also jibes with the leaked Sprint roadmap, which didn’t have any webOS devices listed.

HP webOS Roadmap Details 64GB White TouchPad, Pre 3 This Fall

According to PreCentral, who have come across a leaked product briefing, there will be a new 64GB white HP TouchPad in August. This isn’t simply a color change combined with upgraded storage. This is rumored to have a dual core 1.5Hgz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an upgrade over the processor found in the TouchPad released a mere 3 days ago.

Also on the TouchPad front is a model that supports AT&T’s 4G network (which really isn’t 4G, but we’ll go along with it). That model will be black glossy and have the same specs as the current 32GB model.

The smaller 7 inch TouchPad, codenamed Opal, will find it’s way into retails stores later this fall.

Finally, the HP Pre 3 is listed as coming this fall. HP has consistently said the HP Pre 3 would be coming this summer.

HP Pre 3 Shows Up On UK website with July 8th release date

There is still no official release date for the HP Pre 3, so we grasp to anything that might provide us with a clue. Play.com, in the UK, has a pre-order page that indicates the HP Pre 3 will be “due for release on July 8th”. This certainly sounds plausible, making it roughly one week after the TouchPad launch. Don’t etch it in stone just yet, but it certainly is nice to see the words release, Pre 3 and Buy on the same page.

HP Pre 3 World Phone Passes Through FCC

The GSM Pre 3 already passed through the FCC and now comes a CDMA + GSM variant, which paves the way for the release of a world phone capable Pre 3. FCC materials describe this as supporting CDMA + FCC. That of course narrows down the release of the HP 3 being on either Verizon, Sprint or both. Our gut says it’ll be an exclusive with one carrier. This is a tough spot for Palm. Verizon is clearly the larger carrier, but so many webOS enthusiasts are Sprint customers.

Both the Pre 3 and Touchpad are scheduled for a summer release. Summer officially starts on June 21st.
